Friends 4EVA

FRIENDS 4EVA
I don’t think there is such a thing—a friend that stays with you from beginning to end.
When I remember the friends of my youth, none are still in my life,
Although for many, I don’t even remember why.
A childish fight, maybe?
Or splitting to two different schools after busing ended?
Or maybe you just grew up and moved away?
I’ve been here since I was two- I’ve never gone very far from home.
The furthest was when I got married, and my divorce had brought me back
To where I started so long ago, and none of you are still around.
An occasional card at Christmas, maybe, or a phone call every few years.
Or maybe a heart on social media or laughing at our high school reunions.
The friends found in adulthood I can count on one hand.
Friends 4EVA is a fairy tale, though a sweet one at that.
I’ve spent many years wishing for my very own ride or die,
But we all have our own lives and reality often a faceful of cold water.
But that’s ok because every friend I’ve ever had, you were dearly regarded and fiercely loved,
Most of you have only been here for a few seasons, and I’ve treasured every single one.
I’m grateful to have been your friend in this world, and only wish you the best.
That warm glow in my heart when I think of you, maybe that’s where forever lives.
In the memories we create along the way, the milestones marked together.
I will always remember you, my friend, as if not a single day has passed.
